Method

The formula, and every assumption behind it

A number you cannot check is not usable in engineering or finance work. This is the whole calculation.

L = π × (D² − d²) / (4t);  Layers = (D − d) / (2t)

The belt cross-sectional area L × t is set equal to the annular area π(D² − d²)/4. All three measurements must use millimetres, so L is returned in millimetres before conversion.

Assumptions and limits

  • The belt has uniform total thickness and is wound tightly in concentric layers around a circular core.
  • The roll must contain at least one full belt layer, so outside diameter must be at least core diameter plus twice the belt thickness.
  • There are no material gaps, trapped debris, telescoping, edge cupping or meaningful compression between wraps.
  • Roll width does not appear because it cancels when belt volume is divided by belt cross-sectional area.
  • The estimate is roll inventory only. It does not calculate the installed path around drive, tail, snub or take-up pulleys.
  • Measurement error is amplified because both diameters are squared. Physically verify critical replacement or purchasing quantities.

How to use it

Five steps

  1. 01

Measure the roll outside diameter across a representative section of the wound belt.

  2. 02

Measure or obtain the core outside diameter, not the shaft hole or core inside diameter.

  3. 03

Measure total belt thickness, including top and bottom covers, using the same unit as both diameters.

  4. 04

Enter the three measurements and review the estimated length and approximate layer count.

  5. 05

Allow for winding gaps and measurement uncertainty, then physically verify any critical order or replacement length.

Worked example

Worked example — 1000 mm roll, 200 mm core, 10 mm belt

The example shows the inputs and main steps so you can check the result.

Inputs

  • Roll outside diameter: 1000 mm
  • Core outside diameter: 200 mm
  • Belt total thickness: 10 mm
Worked example, step by step
StepValue
Squared-diameter difference1000² − 200² = 960,000 mm²
Annular cross-sectional areaπ × 960,000 / 4 = 753,982.24 mm²
Estimated belt length753,982.24 / 10 = 75,398.22 mm
Converted length75.398 m = 247.37 ft
Approximate radial layers(1000 − 200) / (2 × 10) = 40 layers

Questions

Common questions

Is this the same as an installed conveyor belt length calculator?
No. This tool estimates how much belt is wound on a storage roll. Installed belt length depends on pulley diameters, centre distances, take-up travel and the full conveyor path; use the separate Belt Length Calculator for a simple open two-pulley path.
Should I enter the core inside or outside diameter?
Enter the core outside diameter where the first belt wrap sits. The shaft hole or core inside diameter is not part of the belt-filled annulus.
How accurate is the roll-length estimate?
Accuracy depends heavily on diameter and thickness measurements and on how tightly and evenly the belt is wound. Gaps, compression, telescoping and edge variation can shift the result, so critical quantities need physical verification.
Why does belt width not appear in the formula?
The roll annulus volume and the belt volume both include width. Dividing one by the other cancels width, leaving diameters and thickness.
What does a fractional layer count mean?
It means the outside of the roll ends partway through a theoretical radial layer. The layer output is a geometric check, not a count of complete wraps.
